Polk Co. exceeds state goal for immunizations

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County Health Department announced the release of the Florida Kindergarten and 7th Grade Immunization Status Report for 2011-12.

Each October, all public and private schools nationwide with a kindergarten and/or 7th grade class are required to submit reports on the immunization status of those students.  The information is then compiled and sent to the Bureau of Immunizations.

Bartow, FL -- Gause Academy students recently participated in a crash course in building and repairing computers.  Students and staff from Polk State College (PSC) Collegiate High, and students from Traviss Career Center, visited Gause Academy to guide sixth, seventh and eighth grade students through a Computer Exploration Lab.

According to Gause Academy instructor Angela Price, the exercise involved both academic and business/computer classes.

Annual FL DOE survey for students with disabilities now open

Polk County, FL -- The Florida Department of Education has begun its annual survey for parents of students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in Exceptional Student Education (ESE).

Polk County Public Schools Department of Exceptional Student Education encourages parents to provide their feedback on the survey website at www.ESEsurvey.com before the survey closes on June 30, 2012.

2 Lakeland students light up Fla. Energy Week Essay Contest

Polk County Public School seniors Zoe Lauters and Jared Smith were recently selected as the first place and third place winners respectively in the Florida 2011 Careers in Energy Week Essay Contest, sponsored by the Florida Energy Workforce Consortium (FEWC).

Both Lauters and Smith are students in the Tenoroc High Lakeland Electric Power Academy.  Academy instructor Gary Kiger, says he is very proud of all his students that submitted essays.

During the week of January 9-13, 2012, Polk County Public Schools, Polk County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Polk County AmeriCorps Reads joined in collaboration for the MLK Day of National Service.  Volunteers, coordinated by Polk County RSVP, read the book “Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Robin Hill School” by Margaret McNamara to Kindergarten students in six Title 1 Elementary Schools in Polk County.

2 students robbed at Southeastern College

Lakeland, FL -- Lakeland Police are investigating an armed robbery at Southeastern College Saturday night.

According to police, around 8:30 p.m., two students were approached by three black men wearing dark "hoodies", one armed with a gun, at the northeast side of the campus. The men robbed the students of their belongings and fled south on foot. A K-9 unit was set up around the area but the men weren't found. The students were not injured.
