Cops: Driver left fatal accident to buy drink

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) - Deputies say a 21-year-old man struck and killed a pedestrian in southwest Florida, then left the scene and stopped for an alcoholic drink.

Polk County deputies arrested Richard Schenfield Friday on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with a fatality, and failure to obtain a valid driver's license.

Cops: Man demands ammunition for his gun at Walmart

Winter Haven, Florida -- A man demanding ammunition for the gun he carried into a Walmart is now in jail on multiple charges, including threatening an officer.

Winter Haven Police say on July 3, Rodney Lewis finished his beer outside the store on Cypress Gardens Blvd. and walked in heading straight for the sporting goods department. When he was greeted by an associate, Lewis put his gun on the counter and asked for bullets.

Man arrested for sword and sandwich attack

Winter Haven, Florida -- A Polk County man faces numerous charges after a bizarre confrontation outside of his mobile home.

According to his arrest affidavit, 50-year-old Mark Christopher Miller confronted several women after hearing a disturbance outside of his residence on Friday night.

911 dispatcher arrested for faking stolen cell phone

Bartow, Florida -- A 911 dispatcher with the Polk County Sheriff's Office was arrested after she was caught lying to a detective over a stolen cell phone.

Officials say 24-year-old Nicole Corps-Torres was employed as a civilian Telecommunicator call-taker and dispatcher at PCSO.

On June 16, they say she called the sheriff's office and reported her cell phone had been stolen.

A detective was assigned to the case.

Mall security guard catches men killing alligator

Lake Wales, Florida -- Two Lake Wales men were arrested Thursday, shortly after police say they caught and killed an alligator on mall property.

Deputies say around 3:45 p.m., Rodney Michael, 41, and Dustin Moore, 28, used a fishing pole with chicken as bait to lure a 9 and a half-foot gator out of a retention pond on the northern property of Eagle Ridge Mall.

After catching it, they shot and killed the animal with a rifle. That's when they were confronted by a mall security guard.
