Bicyclist struck and killed in Polk County

Kathleen, Florida -- A man was struck and killed by an erratic vehicle on Highway 98 at Duff Road this afternoon, just north of Plant City and east of Dad City, Polk County deputies said.

Investigators say the victim was riding his bike well off the roadway when a car driven by a woman struck him down. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle continued on, striking other objects until it came to a stop, deputies said. The driver was detained at the scene.

The southbound lane of U.S. 98 North near Duff Road has been reduced to one lane for an undetermined period.

Local blogger puts Polk County's transportation to the test

Lakeland, FL -- Lakeland Local blogger, Kemp Brinson, puts the Citrus Connection bus sytem to the test today.

Brinson is getting to work by bus and has set goals for the transportation system to meet in order for it to pass the test.

They include:

  • The door to door time should be no more than double what it would take to drive.
  • Arriving at work by 8:00 am.
  • Not needing to leave work until 5:00 pm.
  • Not needing to use his car.
  • Not having to walk more than 1 mile.
  • There should be no more than 30 minutes of total delay (including missed connections) should something go wrong.

DOT plans to invest $111 million in Polk roadways next year

Bartow, FL - The Polk Transportation Planning Organization met on Tuesday to review the $111.2 million road projects proposed for 2011-2012, as the Florida Department of Transportation's five-year work schedule will allot significant funding to Polk county next year. Most road work is planned for Bartow, Lakeland, and Winter Haven.
