Lakeland, FL - The City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department will host a public workshop seeking input from the skateboarding community on Monday, June 18 at 7 p.m. in the Magnolia Building (702 East Orange Street).

The City of Lakeland is currently exploring options for a new City owned skate park. The city wants feedback from those who would use the park. They want Skateboarders to share their ideas on how the park should be built.

Get your boaters' ID card at America's Boating Course Saturday

Bartow, Florida-- The Lakeland Sail and Power Squadron, Inc. will teach "America's Boating Course" on Saturday, June 2  from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. at Rotary Park, 530 6th St NE, Winter Haven, FL 33881.

According to the Bartow Chamber of Commerce, students who successfully complete this course will receive their Florida Boater ID card.

The ID card is required for boat operators born on or after January 1, 1988.

Lakeland, Florida - The nation's top water safety and training organizations are joining forces to present The World's Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL) Thursday, June 14, 2012.

This event will build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drowning.

On June 14, water parks, pools and other aquatic facilities around the globe will host local WLSL lessons simultaneously at 11 a.m. in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record.

Cypress Youth Sports Complex Grand Opening

Lakeland, Florida -  On Friday, May 18 at 11 a.m. the City of Lakeland will celebrate the grand opening of Cypress Youth Sports Complex located at 2125 S. Edgewood Drive. 

This new $1.2 million sports complex located on 33 acres includes football and soccer fields for recreational leagues. 

Currently there are restroom facilities and four fields that are in use with two additional fields expected to be ready in July.

The complex is being built in phases and once completed, there will be a playground, an exercise path and additional sports fields by 2019.

On Saturday, April 14, George Jenkins High School played host to the 2012 Florida State JROTC Drill Competition.

Ninety-six schools from across the state were represented as they competed at the Lakeland high school. This equated to about 2,000 cadets from various school districts. 

The cadets competed in 18 events in which judges rated cadets based on precision and technique displayed during routines. The competition was fierce and very tough throughout the day as teams battled it out to place first through fifth place.

Lakeland Police take first place in Cop Cup

Bartow, Florida-- The Lakeland Police Department team of Brent Addison, Tyler Anderson, Dave Anderson, and Glenn James took home the first place trophy in the 3rd Annual Rough Riders Sporting Clays Cop Cup.

The Cop Cup competition was held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Tampa Bay Sporting Clay and Archery, with 13 four-member teams vying for the title. 

LPD is proud to be the winner for the second time in the three year history of this event. LPD won the 1st Annual competition and came back this year to reclaim the title of top team in the event.

Downtown Lakeland to host urban mountain bike race Saturday

 

Lakeland, Florida-- This Saturday, April 28, Red Trail Racing of Lakeland will put on the Urban Mountain Bike Criterium in downtown Lakeland from 5:00-10:00 p.m.

According to the City of Lakeland, The Urban Criterium is a mountain bike race on asphalt and stairs that winds through the Iowa Street Parking Garage and along Lemon Street in front of City Hall.  

Anyone interested in watching the event can line designated areas of Iowa Street and the Iowa Street Garage for free.
