Polk officials: Start planning now for hurricane season | Shopping & Services
Bartow, FL -- If buying all your hurricane supplies at once is taxing you budget, Polk County officials have some advice.
Start gathering what you need - now.
With the struggling economy, some residents may believe that it's just "too expensive" to purchase the items they will need to be self-sufficient for five days if a hurricane were to strike Polk County.
Hurricane Season is just 12 weeks away, but now is the time to begin preparations.
To help ease the financial cost of putting together an emergency hurricane kit and avoid the last minute rush, long lines and empty shelves when a storm threatens, Polk County Emergency Management encourages residents to use their 12-week shopping list.
The list features a few items that can be purchased each week for 12 weeks, culminating in a complete hurricane kit just in time for the season.
It is broken down into simple categories to help shoppers locate the items in the grocery, hardware or pharmacy.
Disaster supply shopping kits will be available at area Publix Supermarkets, Chambers of Commerce, local libraries and online at www.polk-county.net/hurricaneexpo.
For more information on disaster preparedness, attend Polk County's Annual Hurricane Expo.
Themed "Cover the bases...be prepared," the expo will take place 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at the Orange Dome in Winter Haven.
Attendees will get a chance to speak with area experts, meet local meteorologists, participate in children's activities, watch safety demonstrations, and more.
