Remembering the Heroes of 9-11

Today, Americans will take time to remember those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11. On that day in 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four passenger jets with the intention of coordinated strikes on New York City and Washington, D.C.

Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks.

Bartow, Florida -- Today, Americans will take time to remember those who lost their lives during the September 11th attacks. Millions more are expected to give back to honor the 9-11 heroes as part of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance.

This year, students from Mulberry High (MHS) and Bartow High (BHS) will remember those who lost their lives by continuing their mission of servitude to their fellow citizens. The Mulberry Key Club is challenging students from both schools to collect cans of non-perishable food items.

Kathleen High School FFA Chapter receives national three-star rating

Lakeland, Florida-- Kathleen High’s FFA Chapter is one of four Florida high schools to be given a three-star rating by the National FFA Organization. Tenoroc High’s FFA Chapter received a two-star rating from the organization.

Each year, the National FFA Organization allows schools that receive a gold rating by their state FFA associations to compete for National FFA’s 3-star, 2-star or 1-star ratings.  Each chapter that wins receives a plaque and a spur designating their rankings.

Polk County, Florida-- Just in time for the beginning of the school year, Jaylen Arnold, a Polk county 12-year-old, teams up with local law enforcement to take on bullying.

Jaylen knows first-hand the sting of bullying. Suffering the effects of Tourette Syndrome and Autism, Jaylen has dealt with bullying and decided to turn it into a positive back in 2009. She set out on a mission to educate potential bullies of the hurt they cause others by starting "Jaylens Challenge."

Lunchrooms dish out healthier options to combat childhood obesity

Polk County, Florida-- School started yesterday, but Polk County School Nutrition staff members have been hard at work for much of the summer. 

They’ve spent time working to ensure new national health guidelines set forth by the Healthy, Hunger Free-Kids Act of 2010 will be met, explains a Polk County Public Schools release.

The legislation aimed at combating childhood obesity trends and improving child nutrition goes into effect this academic school year.
