Junior League of Lakeland to host 'Ready to Read Fall Parent Night'

Lakeland, FL--The Junior League of Greater Lakeland (JLGL), in conjunction with the Learning Resource Center (LRC), will hold its “Ready to Read Fall Parent Night” for the students and parents of Crystal Lake Elementary School on Thursday, October 11 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Polk teacher named AFA’s National Aerospace 'Teacher of the Year'

BARTOW, FL-- Lori Beth Bradner, a science instructor at Valleyview Elementary is the recipient of the Air Force Association’s (AFA) National Teacher of the Year award. AFA’s National Aerospace Teacher of the Year award recognizes teachers who inspire enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among kindergarten through 12th grade students.

She received a $3,000 prize and a plaque for her achievement during an awards ceremony held Saturday, September 15 in Washington, D.C.

Lakeland, FL-- Two Lakeland schools celebrate their amazing Social Studies teachers after they were named "Outstanding Social Studies Teachers of the Year for the 2012-2013 school year."

Matt Townley of George Jenkins High and Sarah McCarthy of Crystal Lake Middle were recognized by the Florida Council for the Social Studies after Rozy Scott, Secondary Social Studies and Teaching American History Grant Manager, nominated both candidates for the distinction.

All Saints' Academy to donate $1,900 to 'K-9s for Cops'

Winter Haven, FL-- Students at All Saints' Academy will present a donation of over $1,900 to the “K-9s for Cops” charity program tomorrow morning.

Students generated the funds through the school’s “dress out day”- a day which allows students to make a donation to wear regular clothes instead of their school uniforms, which in turn allows for a contribution to a local charity. The students selected the “K-9s for Cops” initiative as part of their regular charity fundraising initiative.

Bartow IB named semifinalist in 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program

Bartow, FL-- Terrence Commons, Bartow IB student, becomes the only student in Polk County to be named a semifinalist in the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program. He joins the more than 1,600 Black American high school seniors who have been designated semifinalists.  

Conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition that recognizes promising black students and provides outstanding participants with scholarships. The program was started in the 1964.

Local teen, Alana Snyder, wins $10,000 Nordstrom Scholarship

Bartow, Florida-- Alana Snyder, a Bartow IB student, is one of 80 high school students from around the country selected to receive a $10,000 college scholarship from Nordstrom. Each year the Nordstrom Scholarship program recognizes students for their exceptional scholastic achievement and community involvement.

The retail giant has awarded the scholarships since 1994. The $10,000 college scholarships are paid out in equal installments of $2,500 over four years to the college of the student’s choice.

Polk County, Florida -- Ten Polk County students will join approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who are competing in the 58th Annual National Merit Scholarhship Program.
