Polk State College pumps almost half-billion dollars into economy

Winter Haven, Florida -- A study shows Polk State College acts as an economic engine worth almost half a billion dollars to the local economy.

Most of the $481.8 million impact comes from the increased money earned by students and alumni because of their advanced education, the study found.

Economic Modeling Specialists, Intl. -- or EMSI -- is the firm behind the study, which was commissioned to look at the entire Florida College System, according to this announcement of the results released by Polk State:

Festival for children's literacy coming up

Lakeland, Florida -- Lakeland High’s Leadership Cadre will host its annual Naughty Children’s Reading Festival at Lake Bonny Park.

On Friday, April 5 at 800 U.S. 98 South in Lakeland, approximately 600 second graders are expected to show up for the event aimed at promoting literacy among students. The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

Students to compete in Polk Scholastic Chess Championship

Polk County, Florida-- In celebration of 25 years of competitive Polk County student chess tournaments, over 450 students from kindergarten to 12th grade will compete in the last and final Championship round of a five-game tournament on Saturday, March 16.  

The students will play other similarly skilled students, and then winners will be given trophies at 4 p.m. after the completion of play.

The championship event will take place at the Highland Park Church of the Nazarene in the Family Ministries Building:  4730 Lakeland Highlands Road, Lakeland, FL 33813.

Polk Public Schools seeking Hall of Fame nominations

Polk County, Florida-- Do you know someone who once attended a Polk County Public School, and has since made significant career contributions? If so, you're encourage to nominate them for induction into the Polk County Public Schools Hall of Fame!

According to the county, 103 members have been inducted since its inception in 1985, including last year's inductees, Sheriff Grady Judd, Dr. George E. Lees, Kathleen Parker and Michael Yon.

Lakeland, Florida-- As of March 18, students at Crystal Lake Elementary School will no longer have a crossing guard at S. Crystal Lake Dr. and Hester Dr. Instead, they will be encouraged to cross with a school guard at S. Crystal Lake Dr. and Lowery Ave.

Elementary school staff members take Literacy Night to kids

Bartow, Florida -- For those students who have a hard time getting to school events, faculty and staff members at Spessard L. Holland Elementary took Literacy Night to the students.

Polk County Schools says Assistant Principal Tammy Cress came up with the idea as part of her intern program.

The night included fun activities that included storytelling featuring Principal Melody Butler and Bartow Public Library storyteller Linda Chancey who reads books to the kids as they snacked on pizza and cookies.
