Three Lakeland locations to lose school crossing guards

Lakeland, Florida--  Polk County Sheriff's Office announces the removal of crossing guards at three Lakeland locations after June 7, 2012. 

Crossing guards will no longer assist traffic at the following locations:

Polk County, Florida-- The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently named several Polk County Public Schools’ students College-sponsored Merit Scholarship Winners.

Some of this year’s senior winners included: Haines City IB’s Leah Spann, Haines City IB’s Jacob Renuart, Bartow IB’s Steffanie Munguia, Bartow IB’s Samuel Phen and Bartow IB’s Lindsey Ward

2 schools compete in 'ecological wrestling match'

Polk County, Florida-- The friendly high school rivalry between George Jenkins High School (GJHS) and Lakeland High School (LHS) sparked an effort to reduce monthly energy consumption.

LHS challenged GJHS to an “ecological wrestling match” asking students to see which school could reduce energy usage the most throughout April.

The WWE Conservation Smackdown or the Waste Weary Energy Conservation Smackdown raised awareness about saving energy.

The 2012 Polk County All-Star Academic Team Shines at the Commissioner’s Academic Challenge

Polk County, Florida-- The 2012 Polk County All-Star academic team placed third in the Division I state championship at the Commissioner’s Academic Challenge held in April at Walt Disney World.

The Commissioner’s Academic Challenge is a highly academic statewide high school tournament in which districts compete for the title.

The districts are placed in three divisions.

Upcoming Event- Elementary Science Showcase

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Public Schools' Elementary Science Showcase will be held next week.

The Showcase provides the public an opportunity to view science projects constructed by Polk County Public Schools' elementary students.

Students will participate in inquiry circles facilitated by adults, where they can share their projects and answer questions as budding scientists.

Judging will be school-based.

Fourth and fifth-grade students who place in the top three for each grade level may attend the county showcase at the mall.

George Jenkins High School Wins State Title in Veterinary Assisting CDE

Polk County, Florida-- George Jenkins High School placed first in the Florida FFA (Future Farmers of America) Veterinary Assisting Career Development Event (CDE).

The event was held Saturday, May 12 at Hillsborough Community College in Plant City. Forty-five teams from around the state gathered to compete for the top spot.

George Jenkins High School (GJHS) Instructors James Sweeney and Bridget Gilmore worked tirelessly with the team to get them prepared for the competitions.

Two Polk County Public Schools Seniors Recognized as 2012 Gates Millennium Scholars

Polk County, Florida-- Harrison School for the Arts Senior Morgan Craven and Bartow High IB Senior Vien Hang Yeung are both 2012 Gates Millennium Scholars.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selected 1,000 talented minority students to receive scholarships which can be used to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of the recipient’s choice. Continuing Gates Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program.
