BARTOW, FL--  Statistics consistently support the idea that the involvement of a father-figure in a child’s education can have a positive impact now and in the years to come. According to a National Center for Education Statistics report, children perform better academically and exhibit healthier behavior when fathers are involved.

Polk County Schools open applications for free & reduced student meals

Bartow, Florida-- The School Nutrition Department is offering families an opportunity to fill out a 2013-2014 application for free and reduced price meal program students unable to pay the full price for meals. 

To complete the application go to www.polk-fl.net and search keyword: Nutrition. There is also an option of completing a paper application at the school where the student will be attending classes for the upcoming school year.

Polk County, Florida- A public notice from the Polk County Sheriff's Office recently announced that several intersections throughout the county will lose school crossing guards beginning this coming school year.

Davenport, Florida-- Hannah Marie Watkins, a recent graduate of Ridge Community High has artwork on display on Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. in the Capitol Building, where it will stay for one year. She is the winner of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition for her submission of “Carnival.” Each year, students who live in Florida’s 9th congressional district are asked to submit art work for the honor. Leo Gonzalez, also of Ridge Community High, received an Honorable Mention in the competition for his “Self Portrait.”

Summer Food Service Program to offer free meals to Polk students

Polk County, Florida-- Parents and guardians, if you're worried that your children's access to free and reduced meals will end with the school year, the Summer Food Service Program has you covered.

According to a release from Polk County Public Schools, the School Nutrition Department will host the program,  and provide nutritionally balanced meals to children for most of the season.
