Bartow, FL -- Tuesday's forecast calls for a super-soggy day in Bartow and the surrounding area as late-season tropical weather pushes through our area.

What better time to get together and gather around for a good story?

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, children ages 6 to 8 years old can come to enjoy books read by Bartow's Children's Librarian from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Just feel free to come by the Bartow Public Library.

The event is free.

Firefighter and EMS memorial going up at Hero's Park

Bartow, FL -- A new memorial dedicated to Polk County’s fallen firefighters and EMS workers is being unveiled in Hero’s Park on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.

The memorial is designed with three intersecting pieces constructed of deep-hued red and black granite with firefighter and EMS insignias engraved at the top. Between the two main pivotal pieces is a smaller pedestal which holds a bell to ring in memory of those who gave all in service to the Polk County community.

The memorial was designed and sponsored by the Polk County Professional Firefighters Local 3531, Inc., Lakeland Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, and Century Granite of Elberton, Georgia.

It's Friday Fest in Bartow!

Bartow, FL -- Friday Fest in historic Bartow is set for Friday, Sept. 16, from 6 - 9 p.m. along east Main Street and Central Avenue.

The street party features lots of activities for adults and kids alike. Live entertainment will be provided and a bounce house and water slide is planned for the kids.

Food and drink will be available from vendors on the street as well as from the downtown restaurants. Bartow Friday Fest also features an open Cruise-in Car Show.

Lakeland playground named a "Real Field of Dreams"

Lakeland, FL -- Lakeland's Sunflower Preschool Playground in Barnett Family Park has been named the winner of the Synthetic Turf Council's "Real Field of Dreams" contest.

The first multi-colored grass playground nationwide, Sunflower Preschool Playground is the newest addition at Barnett Family Park on Lake Mirror that is specifically designed for children 3-5 years old. The park features age appropriate equipment that provides maximum early childhood developmental and play opportunities.

“We were very honored and surprised last year when Common Ground Park was announced as the grand prize winner of the Real Field of Dreams Contest by the Synthetic Turf Council but now to have two of our parks recognized as Field of Dream winners is unbelievable," Bill Tinsley, Director of the City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department said in a release. “I believe we are the only Parks Department that has been recognized two consecutive years through the Real Field of Dreams program.”

Bartow, FL -- Lunch and music make for a nice combination tomorrow in Bartow.

Main Street Bartow's next monthly Concert in the Park will be this Thursday, Sept. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in Fort Blount Park at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Main Street in Bartow.

Live music will be featured, and those attending are encouraged to bring a bag lunch or purchase a lunch-to-go from one of the downtown restaurants, which will be offering take out specials.

Enrichment Series movie Thursday

Winter Haven, FL -- The Winter Haven Public Library holds its Enrichment Series movie on the first Thursday of the month.

This month's movie is The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei and Ryan Philippe.

The movie depicts Mick Haller as a slick, charismatic Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car. Mick unexpectedly lands the case of a lifetime. What initially appears to be a straightforward case with a big money payoff swiftly develops into a deadly match between two masters of manipulation and a crisis of conscience for Haller.

Treasure hunt fun comes to Circle B Bar Reserve

Bartow, FL -- Ranger Rick’s Geocache Trail at Circle B Bar Reserve now offers Polk County families a free, high-tech, wildlife theme adventure featuring Ranger Rick and his pals from the award-winning children’s magazine published by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).

It combines GPS-enabled technology with a real-life outdoor treasure hunt designed for families, especially those with kids ages 6 to 14.

“The Polk County Environmental Lands Program is happy we can provide this unique outdoor adventure to families in our community,” Tabitha Biehl-Gabbard, stewardship coordinator for the Environmental Lands Program said in a release. “Our Ranger Rick’s Trail not only makes treasure hunting fun and exciting by incorporating technology that kids love, but connects families to nature along the way.”
