School board resolution opposes budget cuts, urges legislative action

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County School Board passed an official resolution at its April 12 meeting urging the state legislature and Governor Rick Scott to stabilize state education funding in the wake of proposed education budget reductions.

The resolution will be distributed to the Polk County legislative delegation, Gov. Scott, state Senate President Mike Haridopolos, House Speaker Dean Cannon and the Florida Board of Education. 

The resolution is signed by all seven school board members and Superintendent Sherrie Nickell, Ed.D.

The event will take place on April 15 from 5 - 7:30 p.m.

Lake Wales, Florida - While mayoral candidates John Paul Rogers and Mike Carter were counting down to Tuesday's city election, activists in the African-American community of Lake Wales were coming together. They're upset about Rogers' connection with the Klan.


But one of Rogers' biggest supporters who is African-American spent the day campaigning for him.


On Monday evening, half a dozen community activists from the northwest side of Lake Wales weighed in on Rogers.

Lake Wales, FL -- 70-year-old John Paul Rogers wants to become the next mayor of Lake Wales, but critics say he could have a tough time bringing the town together because he's a former member of the Ku Klux Klan.


Retired University of South Florida Professor Darryl Paulson, an expert on the Klan, says Rogers was the head of the organization in Florida that was part of one of the largest and one of the most violent branches of the KKK, The United Klans of America.

Bartow, FL -- The meeting of elected officials on Thursday, March 10 to discuss public transit has been cancelled due to schedule conflicts that will limit the participation of the invited elected officials.     


The meeting will be rescheduled in coordination with the municipalities in order to allow more participation in this important discussion.

Lakeland, Florida -- The mayors of Tampa, Orlando and Lakeland say they have addressed all of Governor Rick Scott's concerns about putting in a high speed rail line between Tampa and Orlando.

The trio says now it is time for Scott to get on board the train.

"In summary, there's absolutely no risk to the citizens of Florida and all of the money, both (for) the construction and operation coming either from the Federal government or the private sector," Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said.
