Rep. Stargel on Prescription Drug Abuse and Newborns Task Force

Tallahassee, FL -- Representative Kelli Stargel (R-Lakeland), Attorney General Pam Bondi and Senator Joe Negron (R-Stuart) announced a legislative proposal to create a Statewide Task Force on Prescription Drug Abuse and Newborns Wednesday.

The task force would be charged with examining the scope of the problem, the costs associated with caring for babies with neonatal withdrawal syndrome, the long-term effects of the syndrome, and strategies for preventing prescription drug abuse by expectant mothers.

"We need more information about the unfortunate emerging trend of babies born addicted to prescription narcotics. A better understanding of the scope of the problem is necessary to develop effective strategies to prevent prescription drug abuse by pregnant mothers," Representative Kelli Stargel said in a statement.

Winter Haven, FL -- A public meeting is being held on Sept. 20, to discuss the final design plans for the 17th St. NW bridge replacement project. The bridge spans the canal between Lakes Cannon and Mirror.

The one-hour meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church, 700 N. Lake Howard Drive, Winter Haven.

City staff will be on hand to answer questions and share general and technical information about the project.

Florida Redistricting Workshop coming to Polk State College

Polk County, FL -- The Florida House and Senate will bring its statewide public input tour to Lakeland on July 25 at Polk State College.

Legislators serving on the House and Senate redistricting committees and subcommittees will conduct the public workshop at PSC from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to gather public input on redistricting prior to beginning the work of drawing new state House, state Senate and congressional district boundaries. Redistricting must be finalized during the 2012 Legislative Session.

“Redistricting is a historic event that occurs only once every ten years, and it is our goal to engage every Floridian in this fundamental exercise of political rights,” Senator Don Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach), Chair of the Senate Committee on Reapportionment said in a release. “With that objective in mind, we are proud to host a series of 26 community meetings across the state, which will be dedicated to listening to Floridians and getting their input about what they believe are the important facts and unique characteristics of their communities.”

Winter Haven, FL -- Officials from the Winter Haven Area Transit (WHAT), Polk County Transit Services (PCTS), Polk Transit Authority (PTA) and the Lakeland Area Mass Transit District (d/b/a Citrus Connection), will hold joint public workshops to discuss proposed route changes in the WHAT service area.

Staff will be on hand for distribution of information and to answer questions. The times, dates and locations of the workshops are:

Commissioner Edwin V. Smith earns Advanced County Commissioner Certification

Polk County, FL -- Polk County Commissioner Edwin V. Smith was presented the Advanced County Commissioner designation by the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) recently at the FAC 2011 Annual Conference and Educational Exposition in Orlando.

Commissioner Smith completed the comprehensive Advanced County Commissioner (ACC) certification program which is designed to provide information and enhance skills relevant to commissioner duties and responsibilities.

The ACC program consists of three educational seminars, with 27 hours of course work.

“I consider this training invaluable in preparing a county commissioner to be more effective in serving the people of Polk County,” Smith said. “Lessons learned over time are compressed by attending training and lectures presented by experts in various fields.”
