Replacement announced for retiring finance director

Lakeland, Florida -  City Manager Doug Thomas announced that Mike Brossart will replace Greg Finch as the City's Finance Director on January 1, 2013. Finch will be retiring after serving the City for 27 years.

Thomas said, "I have a deep appreciation for the dedication and service Greg Finch has provided during his tenure as Finance Director. I will miss his tremendous financial insight and the entire organization wishes him the best as he enters his well deserved retirement at the end of the year."

Back to school Monday, road traffic to increase

Polk County, Florida-- Sheriff Grady Judd anticipates a major increase in early morning traffic this coming Monday, as children throughout the county head to their first day of the '12-'13 school year.

Bikers, walkers, cars and buses will flood sidewalks and roadways.

In an effort to get drivers to obey speed limits and safety laws, Sheriff Judd reminds that "fines are doubled in school zones and that all law enforcement members take the safety of our children very seriously. As a responsible motorist, so should you.”

RNC to close road near Lakeland Electric's McIntosh Power Plant

Lakeland, Florida-- Beginning Saturday, August 25, East Lake Parker Drive will be closed to thru-traffic from north of Wydine Drive to Old Combee Road for one week. 

The Office of Homeland Security advised the closure for the safety of Lakeland Electric’s McIntosh power plant during the Republican National Convention n Tampa, Polk County officials said in a release.

Polk crime down 8.48% since same time last year

Polk County, Florida-- Crime in the Sheriff's Office primary jurisdiction for the first six months of 2012 is down 8.48% since the same time last year, Sheriff's officials announced today. 

The Uniform Crime Report (UCR) stats show a total of 455 fewer crimes overall in the first six months of 2012 than in the first six months of 2011.

Police chase alleged thieves in stolen flower shop van

Lake Wales, Florida-- A car crashed into an orange grove, suspects fled the area and an extensive police chase ensued in an attempt to catch suspects responsible for stealing a local flower shop's van yesterday.

Lake Wales officers, a Lake Wales PD K9, Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Sheriff's Office Air Unit were involved in the chase, which lead to the arrest of four men.

Man wanted for embezzling $56,000 from church, using for own Clerk of Courts campaign

Lakeland, Florida-- Polk County Sheriff’s deputies issued a warrant for the arrest of 54-year-old Oliver “Dan” Durfey, from Kissimmee, Florida for embezzling over $56,000 over a 26 month period, deputies reported yesterday.

Durfey faces charges of Scheming to Defraud, Grand Theft , and Illegal Use of a Credit Card.

Winter Haven, Florida-- A Winter Haven pair, who are no strangers to the law, have been arrested for a residential burglary after an alert neighbor saw their vehicle backed into the driveway of an unoccupied home on lake Shipp Dr., deputies said in a recent release.
