LPD officer wins Road King motorcycle competition

Lakeland Police Officer Steve Strickland took first place in the 2011 Southeast Police Motorcycle Training Competition Road King Division on April 9, in Hollywood, Florida.

There were over 90 competitors in the Road King Division. The competition involves two obstacle courses events. One event is timed and the other is not timed. Officer Strickland ran both courses without penalty and was successful in taking first place.

Officer Strickland also won the Battle of the Beach Daytona Boss Slow Ride competition in both 2009 and 2010.

Two Polk students to compete at International Science Fair in Los Angeles

Polk County, FL -- Two Polk students are preparing to compete at the Intel International Science And Engineering Fair held May 8 - 13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California.

The students are Trevor Monroe, a Lakeland resident and senior at Winter Haven’s Chain of Lakes High and Kirstie Tandberg, a Winter Haven resident and sophomore at Eagle Lake’s Lake Region High.

They are among approximately 1,500 high school students from nearly 60 countries, regions and territories selected to participate. 

The Polk students will compete for awards that includes a top prize of $75,000.

Roosevelt Academy teacher to receive award

Lake Wales, FL -- Ray Cruze, an agriculture teacher at Lake Wales’ Roosevelt Academy, is one of four Florida teachers to receive a 2011 Excellence In Teaching About Agriculture Award from Florida Agriculture In The Classroom, Inc.

Cruze will be honored with three other teachers at the 2011 National Agriculture In The Classroom Conference being held June 22 to June 25 in Fort Lauderdale. 

Cruz will be honored at the April 12 Polk school board meeting for this accomplishment.

Lakeland, FL -- The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce Yadira Holmes as Vice President of Public Affairs.


Advocating for small business is a crucial role for the Chamber, and Holmes brings extensive experience and vast political knowledge to her new position.


Yadira most recently served as Legislative Assistant to State Senator Paula Dockery, whom she credits with providing a substantial background in community and public relations, legislative advocacy, and communications.

Lake Wales, Florida - While mayoral candidates John Paul Rogers and Mike Carter were counting down to Tuesday's city election, activists in the African-American community of Lake Wales were coming together. They're upset about Rogers' connection with the Klan.


But one of Rogers' biggest supporters who is African-American spent the day campaigning for him.


On Monday evening, half a dozen community activists from the northwest side of Lake Wales weighed in on Rogers.

Winter Haven, Florida -  The Winter Haven 7-11 store where a Polk County Sergeant Wes Whitmore was killed in the line of duty will now honor his memory.

On Sunday, December 12, 2010, 15-year PCSO veteran Sergeant Wes Whitmore died in the line of duty when he was making a traffic stop.  His patrol car was struck by an out-of-control SUV that careened through the parking lot of the 7-11 store located at 4000 Recker Highway, at the intersection of Recker Highway and Spirit Lake Road.
