Local sheriff's offices see deputies move for more money

Winter Haven, Florida -- There seems to be a talent drain going on in the region when it comes to law enforcement.

Deputies from smaller, lower paying-departments are being lured to larger, higher-paying agencies.

Just this past week, on the popular police forum Leoaffairs.com, a conversation says Tampa Police are "...about to hire a lot of Polk Co. S.O. deputies." It says "Roughly 20 or so" were present at TPD's recently-offered physical test.

Just four Polk deputies were hired away by TPD last year.

Lakeland group takes in rescued cats

LAKELAND, Florida (AP) - The population at an animal rights shelter in Lakeland is overflowing with cats brought in from a home in Brooksville.

Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokeswoman Jessica Lawson says the cats were found last week in a home in "deplorable conditions."

Grow house found in Polk County barn

Polk County, Florida -- Two people have been arrested for growing and selling marijuana, and not providing animals with proper care. 

Polk County Sheriff's Office detectives made contact with the residents who owned a barn on Frostproof Road. Detectives met Luis Delgada and Noelia Ramirez and through their investigation also found two rooms in the barn that were being used to grow cannabis. 

Bartow celebrates Valentine's Day with first Group Wedding

Bartow, Florida -- It was a Valentine's Day to remember in Polk County for 28 couples who tied the knot in the first Group Wedding event in Bartow Friday.

The soon-to-be husbands and wives, walked one after another, down the isle to the Old Courthouse Steps that's now the History Center.

Polk County Clerk of Courts Stacy Butterfield officiated the ceremony.

City manager accused of 'turning blind eye' to LPD chief problems

Lakeland, Florida-- A new report from Polk State Attorney Jerry Hill accuses city Manager Doug Thomas of "turning a blind eye to improper actions concerning Police chief Lisa Womack," a report announced Friday.

10 News received a copy of the investigation which says, "City Manager Doug Thomas did have real time knowledge and was cautioned about numerous improper administrative decisions made by Chief of Police Lisa Womack during her tenure."

Polk firefighter awarded Medal of Heroism

Davenport, Florida -- A local hero was honored by Gov. Rick Scott Thursday at his fire station while surrounded by his fellow firefighters.

Firefighter Jordan Caldwell was awarded the Medal of Heroism for his service and courageous actions on the morning of June 14, 2013.

Caldwell, along with his partner, responded to a residential fire and discovered a wood framed house surrounded by heavy smoke.

Brewz Crewz in Lakeland benefits ElderPoint Ministries

Lakeland, Florida --  A local beer fest is doing a lot more than serving up some craft brews, it's helping the elderly get where they need to go.

The Brewz Crewz Craft Beer Festival in downtown Lakeland helps fund ElderPoint Ministries a transportation program that helps seniors who don't have transportation get where they need to go at no cost.
