Tornado watch canceled in Tampa Bay area

Heavy storms from earlier in the day have moved out of the region allowing the weather service to cancel the tornado watch issued for portions of the region.

Attention will now turn to potential dense fog development this evening into tonight.

19-year-old driver killed  in crash

Davenport, FL -- A 19-year-old driver was killed this morning when he lost control of his car and struck a power pole just north of Shady Lane.

At approximately 1:52 a.m., Christopher Zigmond Lefkoski Drobnicki, was driving his 1996 Black Honda Civic north on CR 547 in Davenport when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the car and began to rotate counterclockwise.

As the car rotated approximately 180 degrees, the rear of the vehicle struck the power pole.

The Civic continued to rotate and the car hit the same power pole on the driver's door.

Polk County Sheriff's deputy arrested for DUI

Winter Haven, Florida - Polk County Sheriff's deputies say they arrested an off-duty Polk County Sheriff's deputy early Saturday morning for driving under the influence in his personal vehicle.

Investigators say around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning, a Polk County Sheriff's Office traffic deputy sheriff who was out on patrol saw a black GMC pickup truck driving erratically in the area of Overlook Road near the intersection of Carl Floyd Road in Winter Haven.

The traffic deputy pulled over the driver, 22-year-old Chad Jackson. He identified himself as an off-duty Polk County Sheriff's Office deputy. The traffic deputy says Jackson admitted that he had been drinking that evening. The traffic deputy administered field sobriety tests on Jackson, which Jackson failed.

Chad Jackson was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail. He bonded out late Saturday afternoon.

Bradenton biker killed in crash

Winter Haven, FL -- 48-year-old Nathan William Lahey of Bradenton died in a crash on his 2004 silver Kawasaki motorcycle early Sunday morning, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. 


Detectives say the crash happened around 1:40 a.m. as Lahey was heading east on Cypress Gardens Boulevard.


They say for some reason he slammed into the concrete curb on the south side of the road, went up onto the curb, and continued on through the grass until he hit a bush and a steel pole.

Haines City begins issuing red light camera citations today

Haines City, Florida -- The Haines City Police Department installed intersection safety cameras to begin capturing photos of red-light runners at designated intersections last month. Today, after a 30-day 'warning period,' the warning notices issued to each vehicle's owners will be swapped for real citations - and hefty fines. The cameras will provide still images and video of red-light running violations.

Smoke alarm alerts Lakeland family to fire

Lakeland, Florida - Mother and son escape injuries after the smoke alarm alerted them to a fire in their home.

The Lakeland Fire Department responded to the mobile home fire this morning on Crescent Drive in Lakeland.

Officials tell us Lydia Ireland and six year old son Elijah escaped the fire that started in the front bedroom.

There was minimal damage to the home and investigators will determine the cause of the fire.

Crashed plane owned by Polk County doctor

Venice, Florida - The FAA is investigating what caused a small plane to crash on a Sarasota Beach Wednesday afternoon, injuring two of the four people on board.

Records show the plane is owned by 49-year-old Dr. Walter Macedo who is employed by The Watson Clinic and is a critical care physician at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
