3 arrested for grow house in Polk County

Poinciana, Florida -- Detectives with the Polk County Sheriff's office seized over 100 lbs of marijuana from a home in Poinciana.

Detectives were alerted to unusual activity at a home on Partridge Way and executed a search warrant on November 14. During the search detectives found three rooms being used to grow marijuana which included:

Polk Co. teacher killed in tragic, Lake Alfred crash

Lake Alfred, Florida-- A Polk County teacher lost her life in a tragic car accident late Thursday afternoon.

Shirelle Baldwin, 44, was a teacher at New Beginnings High School in Winter Haven. She was driving with a student, 18-year-old Taniea Baldwin (no relation), when the accident happened. 

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Baldwin was given the green light to make a left onto US Highway 92 from Lake Alfred Road when she was struck by 22-year-old Christopher Fuqua. 

Free admission on Thursdays at Polk Museum

Lakeland, Florida -- Culture? Good. Free culture? Even better!

Beginning this Thursday and every Thursday for the the coming year, folks can enjoy free admission to the Polk Museum of Art.

The admission deal is being made possible thanks to a sponsorship agreement with the "Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation."

The charity is a family-based organization which makes sizable donations to various grouos and cases around the world.

Thursday is not the only day the deal is available.

New, tough tobacco ban for Polk schools

Lakeland, Florida - In Polk County schools, a new and much tougher anti-tobacco policy has gone into effect.

The ban extends well-past the school's walls and beyond school hours.

And while its target may be the students, the rules apply to grown-ups too.

The idea of using tobacco in school went up in smoke a long time ago, but Polk County's new rules go way being the halls and walls.

Even outside areas are now off-limits.

Thousands turn out to welcome home veterans

Polk County, Florida -- About 3,000 people packed into Lakeland Linder Airport to welcome home veterans from Honor Flight Mission #15 Tuesday.

About 80 World War II and Korean War veterans were on board the round trip to Washington DC for the last honor flight from Lakeland this year.

The next one won't be until April 2014.

Higher speed limits in Florida?

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - Two unlikely bedfellows are teaming up in a bipartisan effort to raise the speed limit on Florida's highways.

State Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, tells 10 News he'll file legislation Tuesday with State Sen. Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, that would increase the maximum speed limit on Florida's interstates from 70 miles per hour (mph) to 75 mph. Brandes and Clemens argued opposing sides of 10 News' red light camera safety investigations earlier this year.

Crosses, balloons and toys banned from Bartow cemetery

Bartow, Florida - Crosses, toys and balloons are just a few of the items that could be banned from two city owned cemeteries in Bartow. Officials there say they need to crack down on the decorations.

Under the moss draped trees at Oakhill Cemetery Tuesday afternoon, there was deep sadness. In one section of the cemetery someone was about to be buried.
