Jury finds Lakeland man guilty of manslaughter

BARTOW, Florida (AP) - A 53-year-old Lakeland man faces up to 30 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of another man during a neighborhood gathering.

Jurors took about an hour Wednesday to find Clarence Montgomery guilty of manslaughter in the death of Louis Matos Jr. just before Christmas last year.

He was charged with second-degree murder. A sentencing hearing was set for Jan. 23.

3 Lakeland PD employees disciplined in mishandling of sexual battery case

Lakeland, Florida -- Chief Lisa Womack announced the discipline of three workers related to the handling of a series of calls where the caller claimed a Lakeland officer had sexually battered a woman in August.

When the Lakeland Police Department became aware of the incident, it immediately launched an investigation into what happened.

USDA predicts smaller citrus crop in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Florida (AP) - As many Florida citrus growers have feared, the smallest orange crop in 24 years will get smaller as pre-harvest fruit drop continues to plague groves.

The Lakeland Ledger reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday shaved four million orange boxes - or three percent - off the projected 2013-14 orange harvest.

Lakeland girl attacked by pit bulls returns home

Lakeland, FL -- A Lakeland girl is back home for the first time since a vicious pit bull attack last week sent her to the hospital -- and it's clear some of Alicia Battles' scars may take longer to heal than others.

"She's fearful. She's fearful," said Alicia's father, Antonio Neil.

Alicia, her small body still riddled with stitches and drainage tubes, entered her family's back yard for the first time since she was mauled by a pair of pit bulls last week.

Calling all holiday parade floats!

Bartow, FL -- Bartow's 2013 Magical Illumination Christmas Parade is almost here, and organizers are asking anyone who wants to enter a float to get in contact with them now.

The parade, presented by Mainstreet Bartow, and the City of Bartow, will take place Friday, December 13th at at 6:00 p.m.

Santa will be in the parade!!

The event is expected to last about two hours.

Floridians receive the most cell phone spam

St. Petersburg, Florida -- If you think you get way too much spam on your cell phone... you're probably right. 

Newly-released data from Adaptive Mobile shows that for the first time, researchers have visually-tracked mobile spam patterns nationwide, and Floridians receive the most in the nation; one in two of us are getting unsolicited messages on our phones. 

Florida, along with California, account for 40 percent of all the spam sent across the U.S.
