Winter Haven, Florida - A terminally-ill inmate died Wednesday afternoon in the infirmary of the Polk County Jail, the sheriff's office said.

Wain Lynn Perkins, 30, of Winter Haven, was found unresponsive during routine medical staff rounds, and failed to respond to CPR by staff and EMS personnel. He was pronounced dead around noontime.

The sheriff's office said he had a pre-existing medical condition involving at least two known illnesses prior to his arrest by members of a drug task force last August 12th on charges of possessing a controlled substance without a prescription and tampering with evidence.

An autopsy will be conducted Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.
