Deputies investigate fatal crash in Davenport

Polk County, Florida -- Traffic deputies are investigating a three-vehicle traffic crash that occurred late Friday evening in Davenport that resulted in two fatalities.

Just before midnight on Friday, April 25, a Toyota Camry heading northbound on US Hwy 17/92 either tried to pass or got too close to a bronze Chevy Cruze that was also heading northbound. The front of the Camry struck the rear of the Cruze, propelling the Camry into the southbound lane, where it collided head-on with a Dodge mini-van that was heading southbound. The Cruze continued forward approximately 500 feet and came to a rest in the roadway.

The driver of the Camry, 36-year-old Douglas Brate, died on-scene. He was the only occupant of his vehicle and he was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Dodge mini-van, 24-year-old Alexandra Arellano, was taken to Heart of Florida Hospital with minor injuries and is listed in good condition. She was wearing her seatbelt.

Her passenger, who is between 25 and 27 years of age, Melvin Jaramillo, died on-scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Cruze, 21-year-old Nicole Beaumont, was not injured. She had two adult passengers and a baby in her car, and none of them were injured. Both passengers were wearing seatbelts and the baby was properly restrained in a car seat.

Brate was a reverend at a church in Lake Wales.

There are no charges pending, due to the at-fault driver being deceased. Excessive speed is determined to be a factor.
