Florida Poly opens first building on Lakeland campus

Lakeland, Florida -- Today is your first chance to set foot onto the campus of the Tampa Bay Area's newest university.

10 News will be part of a hard hat tour of Florida Polytechnic University on Wednesday morning.

The school is under construction on the east side of Lakeland and set to open in just a few months.

They have the concept: focusing entirely on science and technology, with hands-on learning.

They have the students: applications have been coming in for the first freshman class, which starts this fall with full scholarships.

And now, they have their first real home.

The first building is opening Wednesday at Florida Poly, the state's newest public university.

It's the admissions building, where potential students -- and you, the public -- can now go check out what Florida Poly is all about and see what the campus will be like when the first wave of construction is complete.

The enormous icon of the school, the sweeping Science and Technology Building, is not done yet. It's being built right along Interstate 4. Its innovative design is wild to see it when you drive by and definitely unique.

Polytechnic is another term for "Institute of Technology" and the school will focus entirely on science, technology, engineering, and math learning.

At a summit in September, 44 companies showed interest in partnering with Florida Polytechnic, giving students hands-on experience outside the classroom.

And next week, school reps will start traveling the state to market the school to more students with presentations in cities from Miami to the panhandle.

The university says it has had hundreds of applications turned in and expects to have five applications for every one open slot in the very first freshman class of 500 people.
