Polk Co. teacher killed in tragic, Lake Alfred crash

Lake Alfred, Florida-- A Polk County teacher lost her life in a tragic car accident late Thursday afternoon.

Shirelle Baldwin, 44, was a teacher at New Beginnings High School in Winter Haven. She was driving with a student, 18-year-old Taniea Baldwin (no relation), when the accident happened.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Baldwin was given the green light to make a left onto US Highway 92 from Lake Alfred Road when she was struck by 22-year-old Christopher Fuqua.

Fuqua, driving a pickup truck, was on US Highway 92 and had run a red light, causing him to hit Baldwin's Camry on the driver's side in the middle of the intersection, witnesses said.

Baldwin was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger and the driver at fault were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Officials say impairment does not seem to be a factor in the accident, but charges against Fuqua are pending.

The roadway was closed until approximately 9:00 p.m.
