Elderly man arrested for fight over woman | News
Winter Haven, Florida -- Winter Haven Police have arrested a 71-year-old man with attempted second-degree murder after he cut another man in the neck and face during an argument over a female.
Investigators say on May 15, around 9:15 in the evening, Joseph William Bernas attacked Randy Smith at his residence after accusing Smith of seeing a woman who Bernas believes is his girlfriend.
Investigators say Smith was in his home on 18th Street in Winter Haven watching television when Bernas pulled into his driveway and started banging on the door.
When Smith opened the door the two started arguing, that's when Bernas pulled a large folding knife on Smith and pushed his way into the home attempting to stab Smith.
Bernas chased Smith into the kitchen area, cornered him and cut Smith in the neck, then ran out the door.
Police found Bernas' car at his home and saw blood in the vehicle and a knife with blood on the passenger seat.
Police attempted to have Bernas come outside and when he didn't respond, the Emergency Response Team was called in, ultimately gaining entry into the home.
Smith was transported to the hospital and received stitches to his face and neck.
