Winter Haven career criminal caught | News
Winter Haven, Florida -- Winter Haven Police have identified and charged a violent career criminal for recent attacks on women.
Detectives have charged Roger Griffin with armed sexual battery, based on positive identification from DNA evidence obtained from a victim.
Robert Griffin has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1991 and spans across Hillsborough County, Polk County, Georgia and Mississippi.
At the time of the positive DNA identification, Griffin was already in the Polk County Jail on outstanding warrants for aggravated battery on an elderly person.
The attack that has sentenced Griffin jail occurred on June 7, in the 200 block of Avenue S NE. The female victim was walking when she was approached by Griffin who began what appeared to be a friendly conversation. Suddenly Griffin grabbed her, held a knife to her throat and demanding money. Then Griffin forced the victim to walk to a vacant residence where he sexually assaulted her while holding her at knifepoint. Before the suspect left, Griffin took jewelry and a small amount of cash from the victim.
The forensic evidence that was recovered from the victim was delivered to a crime lab in Tampa. As a result, Griffin was identified as the suspect who committed the sexual battery.
Winter Haven Police continue to investigate other recent cases to determine if Griffin was responsible for more crimes in the city.
