Student accused of setting off explosion on campus | News
Bartow, Florida -- A Bartow High School student was arrested after police say she detonated an explosive device to campus.
Bartow Police say around 7 a.m. Monday, 16-year-old Kiera Wilmot brought a plastic bottle that contained household chemicals onto school grounds. She then mixed the chemicals with other ingredients and placed the lid on the bottle, which caused an explosion.
The Ledger of Lakeland reports Wilmot told authorities she was conducting a science experiment. But Bartow police say teachers told them they didn't know anything about the experiment.
Police say there were no injuries and no damage was done to school property.
A school resource officer took Wilmot into custody. She was charged with possession/discharge of a weapon on school grounds and discharging a destructive device and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
