Polk Marine among those killed in training exercise | News
Polk City, Florida -- Friends and family are mourning the loss of a Polk County Marine who was killed in a training accident that also claimed the lives of six other servicemen and injured eight more.
20-year-old David Fenn was killed when a 6mm mortar shell exploded Monday night during mountain warfare training at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada.
Fenn and the others were part of the 2nd Marine Division, a ground combat force based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The Marines who were killed had been in Hawthorne for a month, doing live fire training with 60mm mortars. There's no word yet on what went wrong.
Until the cause is identified, the military has banned the use of 60mm mortars worldwide.
A fundraising website has been created to help raise money for Fenn's family.
