Annual health rankings study released

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - The annual County Health Rankings and Roadmaps tool has just been released.

This marks the fourth year for the study, done by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It uses data to give a snapshot of people's health in counties in each state.

The study takes into account a variety of factors - including diet, exercise, employment, graduation rates, and obesity rates.

The public information director for the Pinellas County Health Department, Maggie Hall, said they use it as a progress report to see what they're doing well and opportunities for improvement.

"Each year we wait for these and we really take to heart what they say," said Hall.

Here are the ranking for counties in the Bay Area out of 67 total counties in Florida:

  • Pasco - 45
  • Pinellas - 38
  • Hillsborough - 31
  • Polk - 30
  • Manatee - 21

And when it comes to obesity rates in adults :

  • Polk - 33%
  • Pasco - 28%
  • Hillsborough - 26%
  • Manatee - 26%
  • Pinellas - 24%

Hall said Pinellas County fares very well in access and quality of health care.

However, they see improvement opportunities in social and economic factors, like employment and graduation rates. Knowing that is key.

"That helps us further work with our agency partners in Pinellas to make this a really good place to live, work, and play," said Hall.

According to the study, the healthiest county in Florida is St Johns. The lowest ranking goes to Union County.
