Boy, 12, wounded in drive-by shooting | News
Lakeland, Florida -- A 12-year-old boy sat on the porch with his 14-year-old cousin just before 9 p.m., Monday night. Bedtime was probably not far off, until something terrible happened.
According to Lakeland Police a dark colored SUV drove by the home in the 600 block of W 3rd St. and fired several gunshots at the children striking the 12-year-old three times.
I'm numb and I'm cold and I'm full of vengeance," said the victim's mom Melissa Noel.
"I'm hurt. This is my only son and he's a good boy. He's 12, he doesn't deserve this."
After being hit in the leg, arm and hip Aleek Saint-Aime was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where Tuesday he was listed in stable condition.
As a result of his injuries, Noel says her son may lose use of one of his hands.
Lakeland Police Capt. John Thomason says they have not determined a motive yet but have not ruled out gang activity.
Noel told 10 News on Tuesday that she thinks the intended target was her 18-year-old nephew, who she admits has spent time with a local gang. When pressed to elaborate, she thought the shooting was also part of an ongoing turf war between local gangs.
"Just turn yourself in and get it over with before this gets any bigger and out of hand," Noel pleaded of those responsible.
"I don't need no retaliations... this is senseless; it's crazy," she added.
Saint-Aime was the only person hurt in the drive-by shooting, but Noel says her home was hit more than a dozen times. She says 13 people were inside the house when the shooting happened.
Detectives are continuing to investigate, and ask anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Lakeland Police Department at (863) 834-6900.
