Making a Difference: Reading mentorship
News

LAKELAND, Florida  -  Every Wednesday afternoon after school, fifteen to twenty students from Bartow High School drive themselves to Blake Academy in Lakeland to mentor second and third graders.

The newly formed "PEER UP-Youth Empowering Youth" program was started earlier this year by students who wanted to help younger ones struggling to master their literacy skills.

Bartow, I.B. students are helping with reading, homework and advice, as well as trying to build relationships.

The initiative is sponsored by Teen Trendsetters, a reading mentoring program started by former Governor Jeb Bush.
