Polk confirms first Rabies case of 2013

Lake Wales, FL-- The Polk County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Section confirmed the first positive Rabies case in the county this year on Tuesday.

According to reports, on Wednesday, January 18, PCSO Animal Control impounded a bat from the 300 block of 1st Avenue North in Lake Wales after a homeowner saw his three dogs sniffing around an injured bat just outside the house.

Officials sent the bat's carcass for testing, and reports say the bat tested positive for rabies by the State Laboratory.

Animal Control reminds residents that bats and raccoons are among the mammals considered to be high risk species, or "rabies vector species" (RVS).

Steer clear of any animal acting in an unusual or suspicious manner, and be sure to report any possible "exposure" to the PCSO Animal Control Section, 863-499-2600.
