Lakeland grandfather shot and killed outside his door | News
Lakeland, Florida - Polk County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are trying to figure out who shot and killed 66-year-old Horace Smith around 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
Sheriff Grady Judd says neighbors heard gunshots in the area of 1044 Captiva Point in Lakeland, which is near Reynolds Road in the Secret Cove.
When deputies arrived on scene they say they found Scott laying on the ground in front of his front door. The sheriff of Polk County, Grady Judd says, "Why would you want to kill a 66 year old man?"
Close friends say Scott was a grandfather and a hardworking Christian man who worked as a paralegal. Before that they say he ran his own landscaping company.
Sheriff Judd adds, "It's very important to us that we catch these murderers earlier rather than later." Judd says there are plenty of witnesses who saw it happen and they could receive a cash reward for that information and they don't have to reveal their identity. Judd says, "I can tell you this. We will put t he people in jail who shot and killed Mr. Scott."
10 News did try to speak with Scott's daughter, Stephanie, but she was too upset over the tragic loss. Meanwhile the sheriff's office set up a mobile command site at the crime scene. The sheriff says they're committed to catching the killers. "He deserves it and his family deserves it. I can tell you this. Horace Scott should not have died and the people responsible must be brought to justice."
Investigators do not have much of a description to go off of, but they believe two or three black males shot and killed Scott. The suspects then took off running, and are still on the loose.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office surrounded the neighborhood and put a chopper up in the air as well as K-9's on the ground. They are hoping witnesses will come forward to identify the suspects.
Sheriff Judd said, "The Scott family needs justice for this senseless crime. Please, please call us if you know anything about this homicide, or to remain anonymous call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477)."
