Haines City woman arrested for husband's death | News
HAINES CITY, Florida - A Haines City woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband.
Investigators with the Polk County Sheriff's Office charged 56-year-old Sheree Peters with Manslaughter and Tampering with Evidence. Detectives said Sheree killed her husband of four years, James, and left his body for weeks in their house along the 5500 block of Jennings Road.
Sheree's sister, Angela Varnadoe, told 10 News over the phone that her sister was "not in her right mind." She added that Sheree has been battling drug addiction since 2004. She also stated that Sheree's husband, James, was an alcoholic.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Sheree's family members became concerned after they hadn't heard from or seen James in three weeks. When they went to the Peters' house Friday, authorities said Sheree acted nervous and left. Family members then found James dead inside.
According to the arrest report, James' body was "in advance stages of decomposition to include mummification, skin slippage, and marbling."
Deputies said they arrested Sheree in possession of crack cocaine at a hotel in Dundee. She told them she sold the gun that killed her husband to buy drugs. According to the detectives, she stated James was shot during a struggle with the gun.
Jim Crawford knew his neighbor, James Peters, for more than 20 years. He can't believe what Sheree is accused of. Crawford last saw James two weeks ago. "It's sad. How you can live in a house and walk over a dead body for a couple of weeks is totally beyond me," he said.
Crawford said Sheree told him James was in a hospital, which was not uncommon because of his liver issues.
Over the phone, her mother describes Sheree as a battered woman who has been addicted to drugs since suffering from a brain aneurism.
The Peters have a history of domestic violence over the years, with multiple arrests each since 2006.
