Free summer meals for Florida kids starts now!
News

Tampa, Florida --  School districts across the state are reaching out to parents to let them know their children can get a free, nutritious meal this summer, regardless of their income.

In Hillsborough County, the school district estimates it will provide the meals to more than 15,000 kids each day at locations designated throughout the county.  It's a number Mary Kate Harrison, the district's Student Nutrition Services manager, hopes to see grow throughout the summer.

"They don't even need to be enrolled in school or even a summer camp activity that offers a meal.  All of our sites are considered open sites and that means all children can come in and take advantage of it," said Harrison.

The summer feeding program is dubbed, 'Summer Break Spot'.  The federal Summer Food Service Program provides funding for the meals.

Sites are located throughout the state, mostly at schools.  Often breakfast and lunch are served.

Hillsborough County is also doing more to reach out to kids that many not have access to transportation to get to the summer feeding locations by sending two school buses that will make stops twice a day in migrant communities in Dover, Wimauma, Plant City and Riverview.
