Arrests at Mulberry City Hall | News
Mulberry, Florida - Mulberry is no Mayberry after a new scandal at city hall.
On Thursday morning, City Manager Frank Satchel and Public Works Manager Tracy Harris were arrested.
According to court documents, the arrests come after an investigation by the Polk County State Attorney's Office.
Harris is charged with grand theft and forgery for falsifying time sheets. The investigation found that on numerous occasions Harris was at the Hard Rock Casino gambling, when she claimed to be at work.
Satchel's charges are related. He's accused of pressuring other city employees to sign off on Harris' suspect time sheets.
The same address was listed for both Satchel and Harris on their arrest warrants.
"I hope it isn't true. It would be a shame if public officials used their positions like that," said Mulberry resident Bob Richardson. "We'll have to see happens with the charges."
Phone calls to the Mayor and all the city commissioners were not returned Thursday afternoon.
Reached at his home, Commissioner James Splaine declined to comment on the arrests.
A special meeting was called for Thursday evening to address the city manager position.
Turmoil is nothing new for the city of Mulberry.
In recent years police chiefs have resigned and the department dissolved, and a former mayor was arrested on a sex charge.
