Sinkhole closes street in Highland City

Highland City, Florida -- UPDATE: The Polk County Sheriff's Office has reported that due to a miscommunication, the sinkhole on Orange Avenue is about the size of a pothole, not 8 feet wide as originally thought. The street is still closed.

Original Story:

The Polk County Sheriff's Office has shut down a street in Highland City after a sinkhole opened up in the road.

The county transportation department says the sinkhole, measuring about 8 feet wide, caused the closure of Orange Avenue SE, near 7th Street SE intersection late Thursday afternoon.

Motorists are urged to use a different route while crews work on the sinkhole.
