Lakeland Regional to hold Open House

Lakeland, FL -- In honor of National Physical Therapy Month, on Saturday, Oct. 15, Lakeland Regional Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Clinic will host a reunion and celebration from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at their facility located at 2125 Harden Blvd. in Lakeland.

"We are very excited to host our first ever reunion," Tony Garcia, Manager Rehabilitation Services said in a release. "The Rehab staff becomes very attached to and invested in our patients and their progress. They become a tremendous part of our lives, and we are looking forward to having the opportunity to see them again."

Former patients, as well as members of the public who are interested in seeing the facility, are welcome to attend this free event.

Rep. Stargel on Prescription Drug Abuse and Newborns Task Force

Tallahassee, FL -- Representative Kelli Stargel (R-Lakeland), Attorney General Pam Bondi and Senator Joe Negron (R-Stuart) announced a legislative proposal to create a Statewide Task Force on Prescription Drug Abuse and Newborns Wednesday.

The task force would be charged with examining the scope of the problem, the costs associated with caring for babies with neonatal withdrawal syndrome, the long-term effects of the syndrome, and strategies for preventing prescription drug abuse by expectant mothers.

"We need more information about the unfortunate emerging trend of babies born addicted to prescription narcotics. A better understanding of the scope of the problem is necessary to develop effective strategies to prevent prescription drug abuse by pregnant mothers," Representative Kelli Stargel said in a statement.

3rd case of rabies confirmed in Polk Co.

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office confirmed today, Aug. 31 the third positive case of rabies in Polk County this year.

According to police, on Aug. 24, the resident's dog killed a bat and brought it into the home, located on Harvard Street in Lakeland.

LRCC to host 'Tee it Up for Men's Health' event

Lakeland, FL -- On Saturday, Sept. 10, Lakeland Regional Cancer Center is hosting “Tee it Up for Men’s Health” -- a golf and health fair event in which men of all ages are invited to learn from the center’s world-class physicians about a variety of topics to include: nutrition, prostate health, exercise, sexual health, colon care and more. 

In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to meet and hear from NFL hall-of-famer and former Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Larry Little.  Mr. Little is scheduled to speak at 7:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. 

Golfers will enjoy a free lunch and 18 holes, with a cart provided, after they participate in the health fair.

Second rabies case this year hits Polk County

Lakeland, FL -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office confirmed today, Aug. 17, the second positive case of rabies in the county this year.

According to police, on Aug. 11, the resident's dogs found a bat in their backyard on Shimmering Drive in Lakeland.  Both dogs attacked the bat and killed it.

The bat taken by animal control officers and was sent for rabies testing. The State Laboratory confirmed today it was positive for rabies.
