Lakeland, FL - In observance of World Hepatitis Day, the Polk County Health Department is offering FREE screening and testing for Hepatitis A, B, and C, and FREE vacines for Hepatitis A and B.

Educational materials will be provided, and counseling is available.

Bartow, Florida -- The Hearing Loss Association of America Meeting at the Lakeland Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) will meet Thursday, July 12 at 6 p.m.

The meeting will take place in the Community Room of the Central Florida Speech and Hearing Center, located at 3020 Lakeland Highlands Road in Lakeland.

The meetings, open to the public,are designed to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support and advocacy in the local community.

County offers Special Needs Shelter Program

Polk County, Florida-- Polk County residents with medical conditions that may need assistance during natural disasters, such as hurricanes, may be eligible for the county’s Special Needs Shelter program.

According to Polk County officials, Polk County Emergency Management provides shelters and transports residents with medical or physical conditions left with no other options. 

Those eligible include Polk County residents living in mobile homes, unstable home site structures or areas of the county subject to flooding.

Bartow - With the temperatures beginning to rise, the Polk County Health Department is urging people to take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, such as heat stress, exhaustion, and stroke.

More than 3,000 people are seen each year in emergency rooms for heat-related illnesses.

Warning signs of heat exhaustion vary, but may include heavy sweating, fast, shallow breathing, headaches, paleness, a weak pulse, dizziness, muscle cramps, moist cool skin, nausea, tiredness, vomiting or fainting.

Free health screenings next week in Polk County

Bartow, Florida -- In recognition of National HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing Day, the Polk County Health Department and Walgreen's have announced a free health fair on June 27.

The event will be held at the Walgreen's located at 311 E. Memorial Blvd in Lakeland between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Polk County Health Department says it encourages everyone to know their status, and stresses the importance of HIV testing to prevent transmission of this disease.

Routine testing is encouraged for all sexually active individuals ages 13 to 64.
