Knowing the basic facts about recreational water illnesses can make the difference in ensuring an enjoyable time at the pool, beach, or water park.

Recreational Water Illnesses are spread by swallowing, breathing, or having contact with contaminated water from swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, water activity parks, lakes, rivers, or oceans.

Open-land dumping of sewage sludge in Polk will be addressed by BoCC

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County Board of County Commissioners will address the issue of open-land dumping of sewage sludge in the Lake Wales and Bartow area at its May 24 regular meeting of the board.

The meeting will take place at the Neil Combee Administration Building, located at 330 West Church Street in Bartow at 9 a.m.

Scheduled speakers include:

  • Professor George D. O'Conner, Professor of Soil Chemistry, Department of Soil and Water Sciences, University of Florida.
  • Mr. Maurice Barker, FDEP Biosolids Coordinator – Presentation on state regulatory framework for land application of biosolids.
  • Mrs. Loretta Firis, Environmental Supervisor, Polk County Health Department - Presentation on local Department of Health regulatory requirements.

Bartow, FL -- The Polk County Health Department has issued a letter urging parents to have their children immunized against preventable and potentially dangerous diseases.

Dear Parents and Guardians:

As children reach their 11th birthday, they become at risk for certain vaccine-preventable diseases. 

The more you know about the importance of immunization, the more you can help to protect your teen from these serious diseases.

New cutting edge health center in Winter Haven

Winter Haven, Florida - Winter Haven Hospital is planning to build new 16,000 square foot health center. 

The hospital announced plans to build on a site donated by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. 

It will be more than three acres and located adjacent to State Farm's Winter Haven Operations Center with frontage to Cypress Gardens Boulevard. 

The facility will be built in two phases and will eventually encompass over 16,000 sq. ft.

Bartow, FL -- New information from the Florida Orange juice industry suggest those who drink OJ are generally healthier when it comes to their diet and are less likely to overweight.

That, according to seven new studies presented this week at Experimental Biology 2011.

A new study suggests that adults who drink 100 percent orange juice tend to have better overall diet quality, higher intake of key nutrients and less risk of being overweight than adults who don't drink orange juice. 

Additionally, the research suggests that children who drink 100 percent orange juice also have better overall diet quality and higher intake of key nutrients.
