Bartow, Fla. - The Great American Smoke Out is today, November 21.

Health officials in Polk County say it is an ideal day for smokers to find their "inner quitter".

This observance is sponsored by the American Cancer Society, and raises awareness about the dangers of smoking and highlights the many effective resources available to successfully quit.
 
The Florida Department of Health in Polk County Tobacco Prevention Program offers resources and guidance to local businesses seeking to offer cessation services to their employees.

Bartow, FL -- Kids with hearing loss and their families can often benefit from spending time with children who face similar challenges.

The Florida Hands & Voices Group for Polk County, is holding a "Family Fun Game Night."

Families will have a chance to play games and provide an opportunity to get together with other children with hearing loss and their families.

The meeting is this Thursday, September 26, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Free diabetic classes offered by the Polk Health Care Plan in August

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk Health Care Plan has announced additional free Diabetic Classes for Polk County residents this August. 

10 News told you about the classes offered today, Monday July 15, and the one set for next Monday, July 22, but anyone with scheduling conflicts may have better luck with the new sessions in August.

The materials, they say, can be life-saving.

According to diabetes.org, the American Diabetes Association homepage, Diabetes is the fastest-growing disease in the country and the fifth leading cause of death by disease in the U.S.

Polk County, Florida-- During the summer, many people crowd the beaches and pools to cool off and have a good time, but Polk County's Health Department wants to remind residents of the risk of drowning, and encourage safe ways to beat the heat in the water.

Polk County Fire Rescue Division reps say it’s imperative to teach and learn water-related injury prevention techniques, and even more so for young children, who make up more than one-in-five victims of fatal drowning incidents.

Bartow, Florida -- The Bloodmobile will be at The Villages at Laurel Meadows on Saturday, June 29, and it couldn't come at a better time.

Accordning to the Red Cross, the nation's blood supply has reached emergency levels with 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June.

This shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year.
 
The Red Cross is calling on all eligible blood donors - now more than ever - to roll up a sleeve and give as soon as possible.
