Crystal Lake Elementary School crossing to be removed

Lakeland, Florida-- As of March 18, students at Crystal Lake Elementary School will no longer have a crossing guard at S. Crystal Lake Dr. and Hester Dr. Instead, they will be encouraged to cross with a school guard at S. Crystal Lake Dr. and Lowery Ave.

The School Crossing guard Committee made the decision following a survey of the location. The committee is comprised of representatives from the School Board, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Board of County Commissioners Traffic Engineering Division, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and a number of the municipalities within Polk County.

While this review process occurs throughout the year, officials say deputies patrol school zones daily as a reminder to motorists that caution is critical.  Fines for those who violate traffic laws in school zones are doubled.
