Pill drop off during Drug Take Back Day

Lakeland, FL -- The Lakeland Police and other local agencies are partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration by holding a "Drug Take Back Day".

Drug Take Back Day is for citizens that would like to discard unwanted human or pet medication they may have accumulated in the back of their medicine cabinet or cupboards.

It does not matter how many, what size, or what kind they are. Pills need to be placed in a clear, air-tight sealed plastic bag, and may be dropped off on Saturday, Oct. 29, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., where law enforcement personnel will be present to accept the pills.

Locations for Safe Disposal:

  • Auburndale Police Department - 2 Bobby Green Plaza, Auburndale
  • Haines City Police Department - 35400 Highway 27, Haines City
  • Lake Alfred Police Department - 190 North Seminole Avenue, Lake Alfred
  • Lakeland Police Department - 219 N. Massachusetts Avenue, Lakeland
  • Winter Haven Police Department - 125 North Lake Silver Drive NW, Winter Haven

This event has been designed to bring about awareness. Accidental prescription drug overdose is reportedly on the rise.

Storing excess pills you do not intend to use or storing outdated medication in your home can pose a risk for accidental ingestion or abuse. Disposing of pills by flushing them down the toilet or sink can cause contamination to lakes and ground water.
