Highway dedicated to woman killed in 2008 accident

BARTOW, Florida -- A section of U.S. Highway 27 was officially designated the Heather Hurd Memorial Highway during a special ceremony this morning.

The dedication was done as a cooperative effort between the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, the Polk County Transportation Planning Organization and the state Department of Transportation.

The formal dedication will consist of guest speakers from the county, a representative from state Sen. Paula Dockery's office, Heather's father, Russell Hurd, and others. Mr. Hurd was presented with a commemorative replica sign.

In 2010, the Florida legislature renamed a portion of Highway 27 in Polk County the Heather Hurd Memorial Highway.

On January 3, 2008, Heather and her fiancĂ©, Patrick Richardson, were heading to Disney to meet their families and a wedding planner. As they were stopped at a light on Highway 27, they were struck from behind by a tractor trailer. Investigators say the driver was trying to text his company at the time of the accident. He caused a chain-reaction crash. Heather and another woman were killed.
