Kentucky Derby Day brings “My Old Kentucky Home” to Lakeland

Lakeland, Florida -- Annual fundraiser supports the programs of Catholic Charities in Polk County Kentucky Derby fans who are unable to attend the horse race at Churchill Downs, can have a local Derby Day experience while supporting a great cause. On May 4, 2013, Catholic Charities of Central Florida will host the 8th Annual Kentucky Derby Day at Santa Fe Catholic High School.

Amid racing games, a rendition of “My Old Kentucky Home”, live viewing of the Kentucky Derby, mint juleps, burgoo stew, and of course, a hat contest; participants will raise money for the programs of Catholic Charities in Polk County through live and silent auctions. Auction items include: an oceanfront vacation package, a two week stay in a lakefront home in West Cork, Ireland, Orlando Magic tickets, and an autographed photograph of Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees.

“This is the only annual fundraiser benefitting all the programs of Catholic Charities in the Western Region”, explains regional director Brenda Reddout. “We could not serve the number we do without the help and support of the people who attend Derby Days.”

Catholic Charities served over 86,000 people in Central Florida last year. Programs in Polk County that will be supported by the fundraiser include: mental health counseling, pregnancy and adoption services, Lake Morton Senior Center, Agape Food Bank, Family Empowerment Program, and emergency food and financial assistance.
