Polk County, Florida-- Bartow, Florida – How does one go about getting rid of an old television or computer? Or what about a video camera, and the dead batteries that go along with it?

If you're looking for a place to dump your electronic or hazardous waste for free, you'll want to take advantage of the upcoming collection event hosted by Polk County's Waste Resource Management Division.

On April 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Polk residents can dispose of any of the following items in the Lakeland Center's south parking lot, 701 West Lime Street:

  • Cleaners
  • Polishes
  • Solvents
  • Automotive products
  • Aerosol cans
  • Insecticides
  • Disinfectants
  • Paint products
  • Batteries
  • Pool chemicals

Residents can drop off up to five of the following electronic items per household:

  • Computers
  • Monitors
  • Keyboards
  • Terminals
  • Televisions
  • Stereos
  • Printers
  • Fax machines\
  • VCR/DVD players
  • Video cameras
  • Video game consoles

If you cannot make the event, the county says they also operate a drop-off facility for these materials at the North Central Landfill located between Lakeland and Winter Haven on Highway 540 (Winter Lake Road). It is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Business waste will not be accepted, but are encouraged to call Polk County’s Waste Resource Management Division at (863) 284-4319 to learn proper disposal procedures.
