Tobacco-free Florida turns 5 - events for Bartow, other communities

Bartow, FL -- 10 News told you about the upcoming 5th Annual 'Tobacco Free Florida Week,'  and how the state's selected theme, "High Five: Tobacco Free Florida...5 years later" will recognize five years of notable strides:

  • 500,000 fewer smokers
  • 169 community resolutions passed to increase awareness of how flavored tobacco targets our youth
  • $4.2 billion saved in personal healthcare costs

In honor of the progress made, proclamations with the City of Lakeland, City of Winter Haven and the Board of County Commissioners will kick off the week's events, followed by tons of other family-friendly activitiesthroughout the week.

Students Working Against TobaccoTobacco Free Partnership and local businesses collaborated to provide the following:

  • Lakeland Flying Tigers game to support tobacco-free baseball
  • Chick-Fil-A to support tobacco-free family dining
  • Polk County schools to support students taking tobacco-free pledges
  • Mid Florida Society of Human Resource Managers to support smoke-free and
  • tobacco-free workplaces
  • Praise in the Park' Winter Haven to support smoke-free parks

"This campaign reminds us to choose a tobacco-free lifestyle to improve the health and quality of life in Polk County" said Dr. Ulyee Choe, interim Director of the Florida Department of Health in Polk County. "We encourage families to get out and enjoy these activities in a healthy, smoke-free environment."
