Local student speeches win: how to overcome obstacles with optimism | Events
Lakeland, Florida-- The Lakeland Optimist Club recently held its annual Oratorical Contest for local students.
Family and friends listened as contestants gave speeches on the topic: How My Optimism Helps Me Overcome Obstacles at the Paradise Lakes Community Building.
The winners of the 2012 Lakeland Optimist Club Oratorical Contest included:
1st Place Boy (Gold Medal and $100) - Gilleb Williams - Mulberry Middle School
1st Place Girl (Gold Medal and $100) - Leah Bonebrake - Sleepy Hill Middle School
2nd Place Girl (Silver Medal Winner) - Isabella Perez - Sleepy Hill Middle School
3rd Place Girl (Bronze Medal Winner) - Gabrielle Lively - Mulberry Middle School
The role of judges went to Kristen Tripoli (Director of Development at All Saints Academy); Michael Gates (World Traveler); Steve Githens (State Farm Ins. Agent & President of Bartow Rotary Club); and Optimist President John D. Johnson.
In the Zone 6 Optimist Contest held Monday night Isabella Perez replaced Leah Bonebrake as Ms. Bonebrake was unable to attend. Isabella Perez and Gilleb Williams placed 3rd in the competitions.
The top-two Zone standings were as follows:
1st Place-Gabby Johnson & Jesse Bingham-Plant City Club
2nd Place-Rocel Balmes & Jasray Purthi-Winter Haven Club
1st place winners will compete at a regional contest in Tampa later this month. Winners from that event will compete for college scholarships at the North Florida District conference in May.
