Roosevelt Academy class named finalist in State Green School Awards

Lake Wales, FL -- The Horticultural Science Class at Roosevelt Academy in Lake Wales has been named one of three Class Finalists in the 2011 Florida Green School Awards Program.  There were 103 applications in the contest, with 16 finalists being selected in one of four categories.  Roosevelt Academy was the only public school from Polk County to be named as a finalist.

Bartow, FL --The Florida Department of Citrus in Bartow has just released the findings of a new study that suggests orange juice isn't just good for the body, but good for the soul too!

New research from the Florida Department of Citrus found drinking orange juice actually made participants feel positive, carefree and rejuvenated.

"Through a patented research process designed to reveal unconscious emotions, consumers shared their thoughts and feelings about orange juice and its role in their lives," said the study.

Swans get clean bill of health

Lakeland, FL - This week the swans at Lake Morton got their annual check-ups. City employees rounded up the swans in cages near the lake and checked them one by one.

The swans are micro chipped and there's a database created to monitor each swan's health.

Bartow, FL -- The Polk County Health Department is encouraging all adults to protect their trick-or-treaters from mosquitoes this Halloween by taking some basic precautions.

Mosquitoes are usually most active during dusk and dawn.

However, recent heavy rainfalls in our area have caused an unusual increase in mosquito activity during the daytime, say health officials.

If you have to be outdoors, they recommend taking the following steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes:

Lawton Chiles Middle Academy students send 10,000 meals to Haiti

Lakeland, FL -- Last week, hundreds of students from Lawton Chiles Middle Academy gathered to help fellow students in another part of the world and experience a community service project. 

Using an assembly-line process, the students filled 10,000 bags of food for the children of Haiti, one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere.
