Polk County, Florida -- April is Water Conservation Month. In Winter Haven great efforts are being made toward creating a sustainable future for water resources. One of those efforts is the Sustainable Water Resource Management Plan, adopted by the Winter Haven City Commission in December 2010.

Polk County, Fla. -- Due to the extended drought, Polk County Fire Rescue officials have issued a burn ban.

“We have held off as long as we possibly can on issuing this burn ban,” Polk County Fire Rescue Chief David Cash said in a release. “Conditions are favorable for the rapid development and spread of brush fires and we need to take every step necessary to ensure the safety of Polk’s residents and their property.”

Blueberry crop damaged, but growers still hopeful

LAKELAND, Florida (AP) - About 20 percent of Florida's blueberry crop was damaged in February by freezing weather, but growers are still hopeful for a profitable season.

The Ledger reports that a shortage of Florida blueberries combined with even larger damage to the Georgia blueberry crop could push up farm prices for Florida's crop by 20 percent. Blueberry growers say the increase in the value of the crop will offset the loss - and that demand for the fruit just keeps increasing.

City residents can dispose of large bulk items such as furniture, appliances, metal, building materials and other junk items at no extra charge.

Lakeland, FL - Later this month you can see hundreds of camellia blooms in an amazing array of different colors, sizes, and varieties at the Lakeland Camellia Society's 30th Annual Camellia Show and Plant Sale.

The Lakeland Camellia Society will hold their annual one-day Camellia Show at North Lakeland Presbyterian Church in the Fellowship Hall, 6725 N. Socrum Loop Rd, Lakeland.

The show is Saturday, Jan. 28. It is open to the public for leisurely viewing from 1 to 5 p.m.   Admission is free.
