No tax increase for SWFWMD

Tampa Bay, Florida -- Although the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) increased its operating budget by $4.5 million for the coming fiscal year, property owners will not pay a higher tax to the state agency responsible for flood control and surface and groundwater quality in the Tampa Bay area.

Tuesday night the Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board approved the 2012-13 fiscal year budget and millage (or tax) rate. The fiscal year starts Monday, Oct. 1.

Winter Haven, Florida--  The City of Winter Haven will kick off its new Sustainable Water Resource Management Plan in an effort to promote exceptional stewards of water resources. Organizers say their hope is for residents to "develop a new water ethic that will last for generations."

The program, called the Forever Blue Winter Haven program, is set to begin September 19 when Cynthia Barnett brings her book, Blue Revolution, to the Winter Haven Public Library.

Polk County, Florida-- The Mosquito Control Section of the Parks and Natural Resources Division has intensified inspections and treatment of known mosquito breeding areas, and is conducting ground and aerial spraying as needed to control adult mosquito populations.

Mosquito Control announced a similar spryaing back on August 1 after heavy rainfalls resulted in a "significant increase" in mosquito populations.

Boil water notice issued for 21st Street NW area

Winter Haven, Florida -- The City of Winter Haven has issued a boil water notice for homes in the area of 21st Street NW, north of Havendale Boulevard.

This area includes homes in the Casa Del Sol and Hartridge Pointe condominium developments. Homes on Greenway, Sunset and Ravenswood drives, Hartridge Terrace West, Lake Idylwild Drive North, as well as homes along 21st Street NW, north of Hartridge-Idylwild canal are also in the area noticed.

Signs have been posted in the area affected by the notice.

Mosquito control intensifies control efforts

Polk County, Florida-- With the recent heavy rains, Polk County is experiencing a significant increase in biting mosquito populations, the polk County board of County Commissioners said today in a recent release.

In addition to heavy rainfall, they say we can attribute the increase in the mosquito population to floods, soil depressions and low-lying areas, which serve as ideal breeding grounds for the insect.
